3. Track Your Progress

Bridget Jones, the main character in the book and movie Bridget Jones’s Diary, weighs herself every day and counts calories the whole day long, and records all of this in her diary to track her progress in her attempt to lose some weight. Did she eat better because of it? On the contrary, she judged herself for eating too many calories, and she sometimes even drank or smoked more to console her feelings of failure.

When we start to count calories and weigh ourselves daily, like Bridget, there is a big chance that we are focusing on the wrong indicators of making progress. If you are used to counting calories all day, I would like to invite you to stop doing that for a while. Of course it makes sense to watch the calories in certain foods. But counting calories is not much fun—nor is being obsessed with a number on the scale! I suggest you use your scale once a week on the same day at the same time.

Use something else to measure your progress. You can use your hands to feel your body getting more toned, the looseness of your clothes as an indicator of weight loss, or the improvement you make in the duration or level of physical exercise.

I have always used matryoshka dolls (Russian nesting dolls) as a way to measure the progress of my weight-loss coaching groups. For every five kilograms my coaching group lost on average, one smaller doll was placed next to the bigger one. This inspired my clients even more than the number on the scale. You could also put beans or other counting objects in a glass every time you work out and treat yourself to a spa treatment when the glass is full. Buy a journal and track your own process that personally motivates you, and you will be able to see the progress that you have made even after one week.

But this book is not just about weight loss; it’s about personal growth as well. So how do you measure your progress in personal growth? You will notice an improvement in your relationships, and, most important, you will have a better relationship with yourself. That is a feeling that cannot be measured in pounds but in the amount of time that you are feeling truly happy with who you are, no matter what the circumstances. I aim to feel good about myself twenty-four hours per day, seven days a week.
